Consider Solid and Engineered Hardwood
One of the more important decisions you'll make about your new hardwood flooring will be whether to use solid or engineered hardwood. Solid planks are crafted from a single piece of wood. Engineered planks are constructed by combining several layers of wood on a core of plywood or HDF.
Both types provide attractive, durable floors, but there are key differences in their uses and performance.
- Solid hardwood is nailed down over a plywood subfloor. The material is 3/4" thick, which makes it ideal if the floor will meet a new or existing tile floor. The thickness also makes it possible to sand and refinish the floor in the future, so it's a potential lifetime product.
- Engineered hardwood is applied to concrete slabs or pressed wood and it is typically glued down, nailed down, or allowed to float. Its layered construction makes it able to withstand higher levels of humidity, so it's more appropriate for rooms or homes with high moisture. Engineered hardwood is more stable than solid hardwood, which means you can install wider planks without worrying about cupping. It's available with 3/8", 1/2", and 9/16" thicknesses of real hardwood on top of a plywood or HDF base. It should not be confused with laminate flooring.
